Key Messages

- low end rain chances will exist through sunset today, but mainly along the coast into the i-10 corridor.

- drier air will move into the region, thursday and friday which will lower heat indices and make conditions feel more comfortable.

- precipitation chances increase sunday into early next week, as an area of low pressure moves into the northeastern gulf.

Discussion

(this afternoon through next tuesday) issued at 1256 PM CDT wed sep 16 2026

An upper ridge is centered over the southern appalachians this afternoon with the local area on the southwestern edge. A surface ridge centered off the mid-atlantic coast. Deeper moisture is being pulled north from the gulf into and across the local area, however pwats are highest along the coast and offshore with values at 2" and higher. Lesser amounts are farther inland. With the moisture gradient in place and the area under the edge of the upper ridge, low end pops will continue along the coast and offshore, however mostly hot and dry conditons are expected inland outside of one or two afternoon showers.

Lower pwats will advect in from the east thursday and friday around the southern edge of the upper ridge and from the SE and mid-atlantic states. Pwats are forecast to fall to around 1" thursday night into early friday. While high temperatures will still be at or above climo norms, lower dewpoints that advect in during the period will lower the heat index values and morning lows will fall into the upper 60S to low 70S at some inland areas.

The upper ridge will retrograde during the weekend and gradually weaken into early next week. Rain chances may return by monday.

Aviation

(18Z tafs) issued at 1256 PM CDT wed sep 16 2026

A few showers and storms will be possible through the afternoon along the coast, however coverage is low. A drier airmass will filter in for thursday. Mostly VFR conditions are anticipated along with northeast to southeast winds.

Marine

Issued at 1256 PM CDT wed sep 16 2026

A fairly tight pressure gradient will keep easterly winds elevated through thursday. Winds will slowly decrease friday into the weekend as high pressure moves off the atlantic coast.

Fire Weather

Issued at 1256 PM CDT wed sep 16 2026

Dewpoints will lower into thursday and friday as a drier airmass filters in. Relative humidity values may fall into the 30S across interior areas through saturday.
