Discussion

An upper level low pressure system will move slowly northeastward through friday and then further east and out of the area on saturday. In the meantime, it will bring scattered showers, and isolated thunderstorms through this evening, mainly along and from bend/redmond to pendleton to walla walla and points eastward.

On friday, any showers and thunderstorms should be from the blue mountains eastward, as the low moves. Beyond friday, high pressure will build over the pacific northwest and dry weather with warming temperatures are expected, with highs even reaching above normal.

The ridge will break down by monday and become more zonal and westerly, then southwesterly in response to low pressure in the pacific ocean. However, dry weather will continue, though temperatures will cool and be a few degrees below normal through midweek.

On tuesday, there looks to be some breezy winds through the cascade gaps, columbia basin and gorge that could reach 20 to 25 MPH and possibly 30 MPH. Also by midweek, low relative humidities will return to central oregon. However, lighter winds are expected. There could be some periods of locally elevated fire weather concerns, but no widespread critical conditions are expected.

Aviation — 18Z Tafs Through 18Z Friday

VFR conditions are expected during this taf period at all sites. Light-moderate rain showers are present at sites in the columbia basin (PDT/alw/psc), along the blue mountain area and john day highlands (rdm/bdn). Clear conditions are present at dls/ykm with just a few scattered clouds. Showers are moving roughly north-northwest and will likely persist into the afternoon hours (50% confidence).
