Our stubborn high pressure over the desert southwest and associated area of ridging will keep the arklatex mostly dry and very hot for at least another day, thus have extended our heat advisory another 24 hours, now in effect through 8 PM wednesday evening.
The eastern extent of the ridging will keep the four state region firmly in its grip overnight, keeping quiet and muggy conditions in play while lows drop into the middle to upper 70S areawide. Tomorrow will see much of the same for the majority of the region as highs quickly climb back into the upper 90S to lower 100S while dew points remain muggy enough to push heat indices back above 105 through the afternoon. Continue to practice heat safety techniques, limiting outdoor exposure and exertion, wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and keeping hydrated.
Our northeastern zones may begin to be affected by the upcoming pattern shift as soon as tomorrow afternoon, however. The high pressure will start to retrograde westward over the four corners region, opening the door for troughing to slide a weak boundary down the mississippi valley, kicking up showers and storms across arkansas. If the ridging relents adequately in time, some of these showers may manage to push into our southwest arkansas zones during the afternoon hours tomorrow, providing some relief from the heat.
The pattern shift which begins tomorrow will attempt to continue through the end of the week and into the weekend, opening the door for increasing chances of storms across our eastern zones thursday, receding somewhat friday and returning into the weekend as a shortwave swings a frontal boundary south. Coverage of impacts looks limited at best, based on the latest model runs. Thus our northeastern zones may enjoy some relief from the heat but areas south and west will still likely see heat indices above 100 through saturday before temperatures finally drop out of the upper 90S sunday, warming again going into early next week. Scattered chances of afternoon thunderstorms will persist through the end of this extended forecast period.
